Barges (three)
Little has been published about this site, so some details are uncertain. If you can add to its story, please email info@shipwrecks.bm.
Three barges lie close to shore at Grotto Bay in Hamilton Parish. No historical record of them has been found: local tradition is that the area was once used as a dumping ground and that the barges were scuttled there on purpose once they were no longer needed.
With no name, date or owner known, they are best seen as typical of the working craft that served Bermuda's harbour and construction works and were disposed of when worn out.
A shallow, sheltered snorkel within swimming distance of the shore. Earlier accounts describe three barges sitting upright and largely intact in about 15 ft of water, attracting reef fish. Keep clear of boat traffic and check access locally. Not a buoyed Government dive site.
